[ Not only does Mayou loosely tuck her arm in his like some classy old-timey lady, but she wordlessly snags the blanket out of his arms while she's at it. Leaving Akira to carry everything just isn't her style.
As for the place she has in mind? Tucked in a corner behind the hedge maze is a sheltered little nook Mayou's taken to hiding in when she needs a break from the Peacock's hustle and bustle. "Sunlight", green grass, the spreading branches of a tree within the maze growing over the hedge wall juuust enough to offer dappled shade, it's everything one could need for a productive nap.

Or in this case, a productive picnic! ]

You're sworn to secrecy, okay? [ She gives his arm a squeeze, shaking out the blanket she's commandeered with a brisk, businesslike snapping motion. ] No tattling. Seriously... it's like, the one place I've found that's reliably quiet in this place.

Then by all means, lead the way.

[and Akira had been perfectly ready to carry their picnic supplies all the way to their destination!1 but when Mayou grabs at the basket, he releases it without much complaint. he too loops his arm around his partner's, linking them elbow-to-elbow as they walk. it feels nice to do this without the push of Cupid's arrow egging him on. . . to enjoy her company on his own terms, without the hearts influencing how he feels]

[he lets Mayou take the lead, of course, and once they reach their destination? a low, impressed whistle tumbles from his lips, before he lifts a finger to his smile with a wink]

There's no better secret-keeper out there than a thief. Trust me.

[ Jeez Louise. Right when she thinks she's getting her footing again, he has to go and give her that look. This is becoming a bit of a trend... ]

Tough to say no to a face like that.

[ Reverse uno. Only Mayou can take one look at a cute face and kneejerk a "no u" response.

Her amused glance at his charming little smile lingers half a beat too long to be entirely intentional prior to her slipping her arm out of his, transitioning smoothly into settling on the blanket so she can eye up the Pandora's basket of mysteries Akira has prepared for them.
As much as sticking both her witchy paws in there and rifling around for the treats within appeals to the chaos gremlin part of her with a truly appalling lack of manners, Mayou refrains for now, patting the blanket at her side invitingly instead. ]

C'mon, Joker. I wanna see what goodies you have hidden away.

[Akira gladly plops down right next to her, tugging the basket into his lap so he can flip the lid open to reveal. . . a variety of snacks!! none of it is very special, but he did go out of his way to pick things he thought she might like, in addition to some of his favorites. bags of chips, some boxes of pocky (matcha and chocolate flavored), a few loaves of melon bread, a couple of wrapped sandwiches, two bento boxes with rice and octopus-shaped sausages. . . and naturally a convenience-store platter of mixed sushi (tuna, salmon, and yellow tail). none of it is very fancy, but it is still probably delicious!!]

I never asked you what your favorite snacks were, so-- [he scoops up the packaged melon bread first, tossing it casually in her direction]

I just grabbed whatever looked the nicest. Feel free to skip out on anything you don't like.

[ She catches the tossed bread with much crinkling of plastic, studying the crackled 'melon' patterned coating with curious eyes for a moment or two. ]

Probably smart that you didn't ask, honestly. I might've gotten suspicious.

[ And who's to say she won't find a new favorite snack in the smorgasbord of finger foods he's brought along? The pocky is a safe bet with her sweet tooth and the octopus sausages are almost too adorable to eat — Mayou has a tiny smile curling at the corners of her mouth when she saves those for last, devoured in one neat bite on little cushions of rice, perfectly portioned.

It's the sushi that has her balking a bit. Not necessarily because it's raw fish (well, maybe a little because it's raw fish) so much as she's not entirely sure if there's specific etiquette around eating it. Should it be toasted first? Dipped? Slathered in that weirdly lurid green paste? Where's an instruction manual when you need one?
She'll just follow Akira's lead on that one. It's easier that way. ]

Mmm. And I didn't want to tip my hand.

[it all worked out in the end! he feels pleased as he watches her dig into the pocky and bento boxes, unwrapping a sandwich for himself to munch on as they spend some quiet time together enjoying their lunch. he plans on digging into the sushi next, but the fact that she hasn't touched it doesn't escape his notice. . .]

Hn? Not a fan of sushi?

[ Crap. Busted. ]

Oh, no. Just taking my time.

[ Dismissively waving off the silly notion she has no stomach for exotic fish dishes might even sell the act. Instead of doing something reasonable like just straight up asking for clarification (over her dead fucking body), Mayou's piling all her eggs in one basket. Whatever Akira does, she'll just mimic him. Easy, right? Genius. How could this possibly backfire.

She's assuming it's finger food judging from the handy bite size portions, but one can never be too sure... and admittedly the stakes are higher since this is a date MISSION!!!! ]

[well, she's right about one thing: it is finger food! Akira quirks a brow at her dismissive comment, polishing off his sandwich with one final bite before he dusts off his hands and scoops the tray into his lap]

Just taking your time, huh. . .

[he pops the plastic lid off of the tray with a coy little smile]

Do you prefer tuna or salmon? I think I'm more of a tuna guy myself.

Why not? You took the time to put all this effort in — I want to enjoy it properly.

[ That's... not just a convenient excuse when it's legitimately true, but hey. She'll take the deflection fodder where she can get it!
She doesn't really have a preference for one fish over the other, but... ]

Salmon. [ Primly unwrapping another melonpan, don't mind her. ] You can have my portion of tuna if you want.

And you can have my portion of the salmon.

[teamwork!! he plucks one piece of salmon from the platter before holding it out between his fingers, brows raised]

Say, "aaaah?"

Honestly...

[ Huff. She can't just give Akira the cold shoulder over something so playfully silly, now can she? It's a bit begrudging, but Mayou sets down the melonpan she was about to tuck into in favor of leaning forward a little instead, obligingly opening her mouth before she can get cold feet. ]

[leaning in means she can see the light dusting of pink on Akira's cheeks. . . but bravely, he pops the sushi into her mouth, though he is careful not to accidentally touch her lips or tongue. would that be too intimate for a second date??]

[ Would it be too intimate? Really? Really really?
No idea, but Mayou catches his wrist (gently) before he fully pulls away, munching away thoughtfully on the piece of sushi while the flavors filter through her taste buds. Surprisingly mild... a bit of salt, a bit of sugar, some vinegar undertones——

Her throat works for a moment prior to her tongue darting out over her lips with a satisfied hum. ]

Not half bad. Pretty good, actually.

[ That hand she's holding hostage? Yeah, that gets a quick one-two peck combo to the palm and the pulse at his wrist before Mayou lets him go with the most innocuous expression like ~ nothing happened ~ . ]

[swallowing thickly once he is released, his skin absolutely burning at the site of those two quick kisses. ahem. he's fine. he's fine!!]

[he is not going to call her out directly on never having had sushi before since she SO VERY CLEARLY was trying to pretend otherwise, but he does launch into a brief explanation]

It's the green stuff. You can put a little bit on your next piece.

[ Akira really is so much fun to tease. That face! Adorable! Maybe Cupid was onto something after all, the bastard.
Mayou gives the lurid green paste a somewhat disinterested glance (the hubris!) but does as he suggests, using one chopstick to scoop up a dab of the mystery substance. ]

Aw... you mean you're not gonna feed me this one too? No fun.

[ Both sushi and wasabi disappear into her mouth. So far, so good, the same flavors as before for the most part — ]

[ D-don't mind her, just taking an enormous bite of melonpan and turning her face away for no particular reason. None at all. Ignore the pathetic weak baby coughing from Mayou's less than zero ability to handle spicy food. ]

...it's alright.

[ HER SINUSES WERE LITERALLY ON FIRE WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL ]

[casually, with a bit a playful glint in his eyes]

Oh. Right.

I forgot to mention it was spicy. Very spicy.

[it's fine. he offers her a calpico, which is not milk but is a cream-based drink. hopefully it coats her tongue just as well as milk would!]

[ Oh lawdy, the sour look getting leveled at Akira would put a marmot into cardiac arrest at thirty paces. ]

You don't say... never would've guessed.

[ The sarcasm! Fortunately Mayou's both too lazy to hold a grudge and not petty enough to take it personally, so the most retribution he gets is a steady, suspicious side eye while twisting the top off of that calpico (strawberry flavor!) bottle for a cautious sip. ]

Some people get hexed for less, you know. [ Huff. ] It's bad luck to cross a witch.

[ooooooh he could wither underneath that look. . . but he had a gut feeling that Mayou would take his little tease in stride, so he responds to that sharp glare with a playful wag of his brows]

Hm. I've never been hexed before. [Akira] What's your favorite one?

[ See, this is why she likes talking to this absolute menace. He just takes one look at the subject matter and goes 'aight bet' to the wildest shit. What a king.
Mayou gives him an amused look over the calpico bottle. ]

Are you asking to be?

[ A deeper draught of the pleasantly fruity drink lets the question sink in a bit in the natural lull. She's reasonably certain he wouldn't be that foolish, but... it's tough to say with Akira. He's not an easy person to predict, even with Mayou's proclivity for reading between the lines.
After draining roughly a third of the bottle in one long pull, she continues: ]

Fylgan hex. In other words — unpleasant effects that "follow" someone for a set amount of time constantly. Very annoying, trust me.

[his answer is quick and snappy, delivered as he lifts a piece of tuna to his lips]

Absolutely not.

[and then he pops the sushi into his mouth! it appears some challenges are not meant to be matched. . .]

[at any rate, he listens to her answer with genuine curiosity, head canted to the side when she says "fylgan" because. . . what the fuck is that mean]

Unpleasant effects like terrible weather. Bigger's better in most cases, but I like to make a cloud about... this big?

[ Mayou stuffs the salmon piece in her mouth and mimes a roughly circular shape with her hands, pauses for a moment to assess, then makes it a tiiiiny bit bigger — beach ball size — with a decisive nod.
Yeah, this big. Perfect for getting inside a building and hanging out over someone's head. Menacingly. ]
